Mice tracks all over the web

I’m sure age plays a part in my thinking, but I’m seeing an awful lot of web designers using what looks like 8 pt. type on the sights they’re designing.
And to compound the issue, I often see it reversed out. Don’t get me wrong. I have, and still do, reverse type out of a dark background. But I try to make sure the font is large enough and bold enough so that is can be easily read. You’ll see some of it on this site as a matter of fact.
I think of a web site as a vehicle to communicate information about a product, service, person, company or idea and not a “design” project. Which makes me wonder if some web designers are confused. Are they using such small type as a design element rather than a series of words used to communicate?
I’m not against design for design’s sake, if that is its stated purpose. I have a hard time supporting it however if the real purpose of the project is to help someone communicate to me about their business or person.
